Original Cheese Tart

Hey!
Oh man, long time no talk. Where to begin? Maybe I’ll ease back into things by sharing some of my thoughts on Pablo’s Cheese Tart which I decided to check it out on a day exploring with my sisters and thankfully there were no lines. And if you haven’t tried this yet, I am telling you, YOU ARE MISSING OUT. I would even go as far as to say it is one of my favourite desserts in all of Toronto. Mmm so creamy and delicious!

Pablo’s Cheese Tarts are originally from Osaka, Japan where the owner apparently spent over an entire year developing a cheesecake inspired recipe which had a completely different texture than the original New York styled variety. He took Japan by storm, later started expanding across the world, and beneficial to me and everyone else in the city, finally made it to Toronto, YAY!

They offer a variety of baked goods, drinks, and ice creams but we had our eye on the prize and stuck to just ordering an Original Cheese Tart, and boy were we satisfied! It was made up of a soft, custardy, and smooth cheese filling, topped with apricot glaze, all inside a beautifully baked flaky crust.

To get a better grasp on the texture, picture desserts that are set with agar instead of gelatine and you’d be on the right track. Agar is an ingredient that is derived from seaweed. Unlike gelatine, where you need to add a decent amount to get it to set nice and creamy, with agar you could add less and it’ll still be set but the actual texture of the food is looser, which gives Pablo’s Cheese Tarts that signature feel and texture.

When you first try it you’ll find that it is full of surprises. Based on how it looks and is described, what was unexpected about it was how it first wasn’t overwhelmingly cheesy, and secondly how perfectly sweetened it was. Even with the thick layer of apricot glaze, it was just the right sweetness! It cost about $15 before tax for a full tart and while I was kind of doubtful throwing away so much on something that is comparatively much smaller (only 6 inches) than a full pie, I am telling you it’s worth it.

After indulging in the Original Cheese Tart, we decided to get a mini chocolate tart. This was okay but nothing to call home about. Just wasn’t as jiggly as the original, and while it was rich in chocolate flavour, I guess I just had higher expectations at this point. It’s a shame they also don’t have mini matcha tarts, or at least they didn’t when I went because I totally would have snagged one of those too, especially considering matcha is what the Japanese are known for!

The service was good, really nice lady but it was super weird how when we asked for forks and knives, she told us that they only offer stainless steel utensils for single slices and we would have to use the plastic ones LOL. Don’t understand that logic but okay sure. The atmosphere was quite cute. Looked like a den or a library, and they have free wifi so definitely a good spot to get some work done.
